Tim “TK” Keanini (pronounced kay-ah-NEE-nee) has held a CTO title in the security industry since 2001. Today he is still working directly with customers and partners, carrying what he learns in the field back into product direction and innovation.
His path to cybersecurity was not direct. Raised in Hawaii, he started as a professional musician, then moved into video game development at Broderbund as a sound designer and developer. Game development taught him early that good products are more social science than computer science, a view he has applied to security ever since.
He built and secured the online trading platform at Morgan Stanley Online as VP of Network Services, then spent twelve years as CTO of nCircle, where his team helped define the vulnerability management market. He served on the CVE Editorial Board and contributed to SCAP, OVAL, CVSS and CPE, pushing throughout for multi-vendor interoperability. As CTO of Lancope he led the Stealthwatch product line, then followed it into Cisco, where he led Encrypted Traffic Analytics, earned the 2017 Cisco Pioneer Award with his team, and finished as VP of Security Architecture and CTO of Cisco Secure.
He has written and spoken across the industry for more than thirty years, from RSA Conference to Dark Reading. Through all of it, he has carried the Hawaiian principle of kuleana: responsibility measured across the seven generations before you and the seven who come after.
